Work experience days 9-10

These pass two days have been a bit slow on the work front. This is due to the fact that Gillian was off again so I was again a technician for the day on the Thursday, this wasn’t as busy as the day before due to the fact that not many students needed to use the print room. However I did have a student that wanted some help on how to flock, so I showed them how to do this and helped them out trying different techniques too. Also I had someone else who wanted to do some more marbling so I showed them how to do that. But most of my day consisted of tidying up the print room and making sure there was enough materials out. It was still an interesting day but it was just a shame it wasn’t as busy as the other day, but this showed me what it was like to be a real technician as they too have days which are a bit more quiet.

On friday Gillian was back in so I wasn’t needed in the print room but Rebecca need me to sort out the students sketchbooks for their assessment. This consisted of photocopying the students photography work which is in their sketchbook. I didn’t think this was going to take too long however it took a good couple of hours as the was about 30 students. They don’t have many students in on Friday so there wasn’t that much for me to do with the students however Rebecca kept me busy doing back of house things like setting up for lessons and equipment.

After doing the photocopying I needed to cut up some fabric for Rebecca lesson in the afternoon so her students could use the heat press.

Then in the afternoon Rebecca wanted me to spray paint some scissors because students keep taking them from the photography room and she didn’t want any more stolen. This was actually quite fun to do as I’ve never spray painted before and they came out really well.

Overall I haven’t done much these pass two days compared to the beginning of the week however it has showed me that even when the students aren’t in they is always something lecturers and techinican have to do.

Work Experience days 6-8

I have been quite busy these past few days and they have been really interesting and exciting as I’ve been able to try out some new techniques. At the beginning of this week Rebecca has been off ill, therefore when I got in there was a note left on my desks with some tasks to do, the first thing was to cut and laminate some learning resources for the students which where images of different artists. This took me a good few hours as there was over 50 images that I first had to cut down then laminate and then cut down again. The amount of work that they put in to just the little things to help students to learn is crazy.

After that I had a go at the metal Etching that I prepared for the workshop so I knew how to do it if the students asked me. I really like this new technique I learned as it created some interesting prints and you could capture a lot of detail with this technique, I would like to try more of this technique in my subject.

Then for the rest of the day Gillian asked me to research different marbling techniques for the marbling workshop the next day. And I helped her to set up for the taster lesson she was doing after college finished.

And then the next day Rebecca wasn’t in again, so because she wasn’t here the other lectures had to help to cover the lessons she had and they needed my help, it was an 2 hour lesson which we gave the student 1:1 tutorial to see how they where getting on and helped them to progress. I enjoyed doing this because it allowed me to see what it was like to be a lecturer.

Then this same class some of the students wanted to use the print room to try new techniques so me and Gillian helped them out in the print room. I had a group of students that wanted to learn how to tie die for the promotional t-shirts they were making for Marwell Zoo. So I gave them a workshop to show them how to do this. I really enjoyed this as it was great to see what they could come up with after teaching them.

After this me and Gillian done the marbling workshop. I showed them how to marble on to paper with oil paints and white spirit. And then Gillian showed them how you can marble on to fabric by using shaving foam and heat transfer dyes. I have never done this technique before and thought that the technique was amazing and simple and I would love to try this in my subject area. The samples that I tried in the workshop worked really well and I think it would work really well in my subject area. And the students seemed to enjoy the workshop too which is always good.

The next day Gillian was off sick so there was no print technician and Rebecca was back today so I was given the job of being the print technician for the day. This was really exciting but scary as it is a big job.

Life in a day of an print technician… to start with I had to make sure the machines where on also that the room was set up for the day which consisted of washing up the mess and making sure everything was out and ready to be used. And then when the students started coming in I helped show them techniques and processes. Also the student have to buy some of the materials that they need so I had to sort that out too.

I also had a student that wanted me to teach her how to do the marbling that she saw from the marbling workshop that she didn’t attend so I showed her how to do that. Also I helped some students getting the right colours for their heat press prints. Also through out the day I had to make sure everyone is being safe and keeping the room tidy, if not I had to clean it up.

Overall I have really enjoyed my day as an technician an it has been really insightful in showing me what it is like to be a technician. And I quite like it. Furthermore I’ve liked teaching the workshops and getting involved with the students more, which I feel like that’s what this week has been all about so far which is nice and last week was about making learning resources and prep for the workshops which logically makes sense. I’m looking forward to the next few days.

Work experience days 3-5

Over the last few days Rebecca has got me to make an learning resource for the students. The dairy is a whole building which allows the Student use a massive range of equipment and materials for different techniques, like glass cutting, ceramics, laser cutting, 3d and loads more. Therefore Rebecca had made an dairy dictionary for the student which consisted of key art words to help them out with analyse their work with the correct terms.

However she said to me that she wanted it to be expanded and to look more appealing, so I had the job of sorting this out. Here is what the original diary dictionary looked like.

It was layout as a dictionary would be (alphabetical) however Rebecca wanted this change into art subheadings like photography based works and so on, so I organised this first and then added in more words to each of this categories and then added related images to each one.16358810_10154589641357284_679326917_n

This is how one page looked like and I had to do 24 pages like this. This process took a very long time to do, and it had to all be black and white as it has to be printed a lot.

This is what the final product came out like, Rebecca really liked the changes I made to it and it is going to get printed so every student can have one to reference from. After doing this it has showed me that it takes a very long time to put together learning resources for students.

Sadly I wasn’t able to go in on Friday as I was really ill and on antibiotics and steroids. But overall I’ve had a good first week in my work placement.

Work experience days 1-2

I have started my work placement an college being a technician for the art & design and textiles departments also a lecture.

My first day was a little slow as we had problems with getting me around the buildings as I don’t have my own ID bagde yet so it has been a bit hard. But Rebecca has been on their case and I should be able to get around freely soon.

In the first hour of the first day I started of by helping the technicians set up for the day, so I checked the sewing machines and things like that. After that got to know the staff I would be working with and we discussed what I could possibly do in the next few weeks. They were interesting in me running some enrichment workshops on illustrator to Students to teach them how to use illustrator and get a file ready to be laser cut. The only problem with this is that it has been I while since I’ve done this and haven’t sorted out a laser cutter file on illustrator before, I told them this and they said that I can teach my self before I teach the class in the next few days when I am in.

After that Sue asked me to make etching tiles for a student workshop. The process of making these tiles is really long when you need enough for a big group of students.

To start with I had to measure up the tiles and then cut the metal which was fun to do as I got to use the industrial giliten for metal.

The next thing I had to do is degrease the metal with salt and vinegar and chalk but I wasn’t allowed to touch the tiles with my hands because of the grease on my fingers, this took a while.

And then the next day I had to ink up the tiles with etching ground black ink.

And then lastly I had to put these tiles on to a hot plate to allow the ink to cook. This process took a very long time to do and it has made me understand that their is a lot of prep work to teaching a workshop for a group of students.

Also on this same day I was helping out in classes talking to Student to help them with these work and to give them ideas. Also they had just had a assessment so the lecturers asked me to organise the students work so it wouldn’t get lost.

Overall it has been an ok start to my work placement and I’m looking forward to seeing what I will be doing  for the next few weeks.
