This exhibition showcases the work of the designers that attended the same field study as me, home truths. I really like how it has been displayed as a dinner table, it works really well with the context of the work.
Constellation so far this year has actually surprised me, I thought these 5 hour sessions I have been having would be really long and hard for me to keep focused however it has been the opposite. By having these 5 hours long sessions it has allowed us to go in to more depth about the area of goddesses and monsters and we have been able to have debates and discussions in our class on the topic which has allowed me to understand the area a lot more. And I would even say that the 5 hour sessions felt like they went by quicker than the 2 hour ones we had last year.
Cath’s columns analysis is a way that helps me to plan my essays, this method consists of three columns. This first column is describe, this is the column in which you describe all of the different element you can see in the image and be as detailed as you can to capture that element of the image. Once you have done that you have the second column which is analyse, for this column you talk about the different meanings to the element you have described, so if something is blue what does that suggest? That’s the sort of thing that needs to go in that column. Also, you have to make sure you go in depth in this part. The last column is the theory, we have this column to back up the point you have made in your analysis so it is not a sweeping statement you have made. For this column, you have to make sure you have theories from different places and academics, you can’t have all of your theory from only a few people.
I had a few difficulties filling out these last two columns as I would get a bit stuck on understand on where I would need to look to find the theory, however the way these columns are laid out if I describe what I see in the image and then analyse that detail I just have to research the theory that is related to the keywords I have used in my analysis to back it up. Furthermore, there was a few times which I would get stuck on the analyse column as well, and to solve this I just learnt that I would need to do a lot more reading to understand. Therefore, I feel that Caths columns has allowed me to get a better understand of what I need to be putting in my essay and if I get stuck on writing my essay I know how to go about find out how to solve that problem now.
Therefore, I think it has been useful in the analysis and writing about others work in constellation as it has made me think about how much detail I should be putting in to understanding the text I’m reading or in my case in my practice at the moment we have had a project that is really heavy in researching in to companies and designers. Therefore because of constellation I have been able to understand that there is hidden thing that designers put in to their work and I can now unpick the designers a lot more than I could before I had constellation.
I believe the significant concepts and theories that have emerged in my columns analysis was the theories of the monstrous body, partially the idea of stitching. If something has been stitched in the skin it has marked the skin and damaged it therefore it can unravel and reveal what is underneath. This made me think about my own work in my practice as I stitch in to fabric it makes me question if whether by doing this am I now creating something monstrous as I am damaging the fabric.
Furthermore I’ve really enjoyed writing this terms essay, looking at how the character Harley Quinn has been portrayed in the film suicide squad, looking in to how they have used costume and makeup to portray the character as erotic. I possibly want to explore this area more in my dissertation maybe looking in to how women are portrayed in films. However, I was also thinking about possibly doing the business plan as I really struggle with writing and I’ve always wanted to start my own business and I feel like this would be really helpful for me. However, I’m not really sure what the business plan entails so I would definitely need to find out more before I even consider taking this rote.
If I was to reflect back to when I was in level 4 I would never have been thinking about applying what I have learnt in constellation in to my subject area. However, after this year so far, with the depth of my understanding being much deeper due to the fact that we have had very intense study groups allowing me to be able to take in a lot more information, I can see how I could apply these academic theories to my practice so there is a lot more meaning and depth to my work. Furthermore, it has made me think about the way I understand texts and how I could be talking about designer and analysing them.
Home Truth for me has been an amazing field project as I’ve been able to explore an area of art and design which I’ve always been interested in but haven’t had the opportunity to go in depth with it and explore the wide range of different techniques it has to offer. Therefore by doing this field group it has allowed me to have a better understanding of ceramics and how different clays should be treated and how clay can be manipulated in different ways to create some amazing ceramic pieces. In this short project I have managed to learn so many different processes that I’ve never done before due to having loads of workshops and the technical staff and lectures going in depth about each process.
Furthermore the actual topic off this project ‘Home Truth’ has made me think about how imagery is really important to get across a story or subject matter if no words have been used. It has made me think that I should be definitely doing this more in my own work back in my subject area due to the fact that I mainly use just imagery to portray a theme.
One technique that I would like to possibly do in future projects in subject is decals as I believe this is something that would work really well with surface patterns and I could imagine creating something like a kitchen collection with tiles, plates bowls and so on. However the colours came out a little lighter and not the same shade as when I sent them off to be printed therefore if I was to do this again I would have to take this into consideration.
Furthermore the best thing with decals is that I could do my digital pattern on illustrator like I normally do and then just transfer them in to Photoshop to be sent of to be printed. Therefore this technique is very simple but it allows you to create some extremely detailed ceramics that captures exactly what you wanted the surface pattern to look like.
Overall I am very happy that I was able to change field groups as it has allowed me to develop skill in ceramics which is something that I have always been interesting in learning more about and it has also shown me that it is something that I could apply to my subject area if I wanted to.
